September 24-October 4: Journey of Self Discovery

Personal Journey

Students have been delving into the unit by exploring their own journey through life.  Discussions have centered around how they were when they were young and how they are now with a focus on the changes that have occurred along the way.

To better understand their journeys, students created a timeline of important events from their life.  They included events that helped to make them who they are now.  In addition to their timeline students have also been active in writing in their journals and reflecting on change in their life and how they have overcome hardships or struggles.

Students have also been exercising their artistic abilities by creating an abstract self portrait using paint and colored pencils.  Abstraction and color was encouraged as a way to show a different side of themselves through their stylistic choices.

Famous Person's Journey

While they have been reflecting on their own personal journey, students worked in a group to research the life journey of a famous person.  Examples include Michael Jordan, Steve Jobs, Helen Keller, Jackie Chan, Fanny Ben-Ami, and J.K. Rowling.  Students used computers to research important events, challenges, and difficulties that their selected person had to overcome.

After making a poster of their findings, they delved deeper by finding helpful videos to share with the class.  Students presented their further research in a creative method of their design such as through a comic book, game, mind map, or puzzle box.

Preparation for Sports Day

This coming Friday is Sports Day and students have been hard at work preparing.  Poems for each team were created by 5th graders and to be chanted by all.  Whether running or practicing basic karate, students have been using their PE time to prepare for the big event.  We hope to see you all there!
