How We Organize Ourselves

How We Organize Ourselves

An inquiry into the interconnectedness of human made systems and communities, the structure and the function of organizations, societal decision making economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment.

Students are inquiring about their certain curiosities which is an exercise in societal decision-making. This is so because one must ask questions to best understand the needs and resources of a a community. That information will be used to make a plan.
Seitaro, Harun, and Sayaka are all demonstrating the Learner Profile Open-Minded because in order to have a discussion about certain topics one must be willing to hear other perspectives.

Central idea: Human beings form communities based on their needs and local resources.

Grade 5 students have formed their own community based on the needs and resources of their classroom, school and interpersonal selves. They have built strong relationships, supported one another emotionally and academically.  Their needs vary but each person uses their strengths to help others with their weaknesses. Each Grade 5 student is exhibiting the Learner Profile Caring
because of many acts of kindness I've witnessed this term.

In these 4 photos students are using their knowledge of coordinate planes, ordered pairs, x and y axis and their ability to read their opponent in the epic game Battle Ship.
All students exude the Learner Profile knowledgeable because they have learned the new skill of plotting coordinates on a x and y axis  and are demonstrating that knowledge here.

An economic activity, unfortunately is war and when society makes the decision to wage war there are battles to be won. You've sunk my battleship!!!

Seitaro displays the Learner Profile Principled because he found the task challenging but persevered and thoughtfully completed it.
Subah dsplays the Learner Profile Thinker because she is deep in thought. She is setting goals for herself in the New Year.  Setting goals is one way communities are formed.
This activity is a step in understanding our Central Idea.

Lines of inquiry:

Kinds of communities

• Humans’ needs

• How local circumstances influence the

   formation of communities

• Negative side effects of urbanization and

   urban sprawl

In these two photos the class is using their bargaining skills to acquire as much money as they can from their friends using the power of persuasion. Beneficially all students speak multiple languages so they all can barter with the best of them! In forming a community or organization one must be prepared to find the best deals when providing resources to others. Also knowing how to present your plan in a persuasive manner will surely benefit your community.
Students here are showing us the Learner Profile risk taker because effective bargaining takes confidence even when the outcome is unknown.
Here students are concentrating on character analysis for the play SEEDFOLKS. This play is a look into a broken community with very little resources and a need for emotional support. Grade 5 students discover that a community garden does more than provide vegetables and look pretty in spring.
It forms a community of strangers whos suspicion of one another changes into care and curiosity of one another. Students will perform parts of this play during our YEP 2022.
Please come join us to see your students present a play about coming together despite our differences.
