Kids Plaza Field Trip: May 20-24

Our field trip to Kids Plaza was a success and fun for all!  We enhanced our inquiry unit with study of the human body and its different functions/systems.  Students spent the first half of the trip taking notes and learning in the Human Body and Science zones.  After lunch we expanded our learning to other science areas as well as cultural studies.  We ended the day with free play on the amazing playground slides and play area.

Week 5: May 13-17

We started this week off with a primary assembly run by our student council.  Our learner profile theme for this month is "Communicator" so students played a few games centered around the importance of good communication.  We also announced merit winners (Hilal and Angelique) for the month of April.  Last month our theme was "Caring" and students voted for who they thought was the most caring student and Momiru was the winner.  We will be announcing the best communicator early next month.

Unit of Inquiry (UoI):
In continuation of our learning about mental health we have expanded our research on various mental disorders and phobias.  Students have finished their informational posters and made a presentation to the class about the different mental disorders they chose to write about.  Students also found helpful youtube videos on this topic to share and discuss with the class.  Students created and played a memory game about different physical and mental health topics to better understand each.

During our art time students took some time to express an emotion through their artwork without using any words as part of our expansion of mental health.

Next week we will be starting work on our summative assessment and concluding our unit on both physical and mental health and the connection between the two.

English:
We've been spending more time discussing different types of personality types with a focus on introverts and extroverts and how each learn and express themselves in different ways.  Students performed skits with examples of each and their classmates had to identify who the introvert/extrovert was.

Students spent some class time studying at the park where they did some creative writing and reading.  Streets and Alleys was a team building game we played at the park with grades 3, 4, and 6.

Next week will be Literacy Week here at Abroad and we are stressing the importance of reading through different activities and learning.  And of course reading, reading, reading!  Students are encouraged to bring any books written in their native language to share with the class.  Parents are welcome to read a story in their native language to our class any time this week during our morning meetings.  Let us know if you are interested!
