December 9-20: New Unit and End of the Year Fun

We made it to Winter Break!  Thank you everyone for all of your hard work, and make sure you take some time to relax because you all deserve it!  Here are a few highlights from our last weeks of December.

New Unit
Our new unit is focused on how media uses different techniques to influence perspective.  Students created an advertisement for their product and presented it to inform buyers in a matter-of-fact manner of what they were selling.  Next they used a persuasive way to sell it by making their posters colorful, creating sales, using a change of volume, and making their sales pitch engaging and fun.  Student vendors created ads for Magic Burger, X Phone Z, Zoro Shoes, and Happy Eats.

UNICEF
A Grade 6 student has started a collaboration with UNICEF to help raise funds.  A speaker for the organization visited our school and provided a presentation and workshop to educate Grades 5-8 about what they do.  We learned about the efforts made to help with disaster relief, refugee aid, education, medical aid, and much more.  After our studies with the United Nations, students were particularly interested in this organization which focuses on helping children around the world.

Crafts
Students took some time to embrace their creative side by making bookmarks for reading over the break.  They learned how to cut and weave construction paper with some cool results.  We also made some interesting cork designs that can be used as a keychain.  It was a nice and relaxing way to end the year.

Talent Show
Finally, students participated in the Abroad Talent Show.  Such a great display of talent from Grade 5!  Hyeri sang a song, Chinmay and Ahmet performed a magic show, Hilal sang, and Angelique and Sarah performed a dance.  Yua from Grade 2 was the winner of the individual performance while Angelique and Sarah were the winners for the group category.  Great job to all the Risk-Takers!

December 2-6

Unit of Inquiry (UoI)

This week we completed our Inquiry wall and began work on our new unit.  We began by exploring what we know about various forms of media as a means of mass communication.  After a brainstorming session, students reorganized their data into an informative poster.

Basketball Tournament

This week also featured the big basketball tournament.  Students were divided into colored teams and competed against each other as well as teachers.  Everyone had worked so hard to prepare and it showed in the competition.  Good job everyone!

Science Week: November 25-29

Science Week

To celebrate Science Week students created banners and posters, participated in the science lab, and conducted social experiments to display at the science fair on Friday.

Banners/Posters

Students worked in three teams to create a large banner to display for the whole school to see on floors 5-7 of the school.  Quotes, pictures, and color were all added to encourage everyone to celebrate science.  Each student was also given a topic such as light, sound, gravity, genetics, etc to research and show their learning through a poster.  Lots of thought and detail went into all of this and it paid off with a great display.

Science Lab

Students explored seven different stations of experiments on Thursday.  There were lots of exciting things to play with and learn about such as the robot that could solve a Rubix cube, the spaghetti bridge, static electricity balloons, and more.  There was something in the lab for everyone and all interests.

Social Experiment and the Science Fair

In conjunction with our unit, students created a social experiment which they performed on other students to test behavior.  Students divided into four groups and each came up with two social experiments to perform.  All steps to the Scientific Method were followed and recorded: Purpose, Research, Hypothesis, Experiment, Analysis, and Conclusion.  Here are a few of the experiments they tried:

-Dropping lots of notebooks and pencils to see if someone would help
-Drawing "graffiti" on someone's classwork
-Bullying someone behind their back
-Pretending to be sad to see if someone would check on them

We were all happy to see a lot of students do the right thing and help when needed.  Students made a video at the conclusion of our experiments to explain to all classes about our experiments and ensure that Grade 5 wasn't actually doing any real bullying, graffiti, etc.

After all experiments were complete, the data was organized onto a poster for the Science Fair display.  Students also spent time reflecting on what happened and what they might have done in a similar situation.  Because there were so many students who stood out for doing the right thing, Grade 5 made an Abroad Heroes section to recognize those students.  They wrote a description of how each student helped.

There was so much to see and interact with at the Science Fair!  Compost collections, paper making from recycled materials, slime, biome dioramas, motion sensing robotic cars, and oil/water combinations were just some of the interesting things on display.
