Welcome Back! June 1-5

Welcome back everyone!  We are all excited to be back at school with our friends and sharing our thoughts and ideas.  Masks are on, desks are sanitized, hands are washed, and learning is everywhere.  Thank you to all the students who are trying incredibly hard to keep our classroom and school extra safe and clean.  Keep up the great work!  Here are some highlights from our first week back.

UoI:

We have jumped right into our second unit of the year with a focus on Science and experimentation.  Students are learning that all things are composed of elements and are exploring what and where they occur.  Minds and eyes are open as students search for items with these elements all around them.

Since our unit is themed around experimentation, students have begun research on experiments they can do both at home and at school.

Art:

After reviewing primary colors, we learned about the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian and examined how he effectively used red, blue, and yellow in a grid pattern.  Students created their own version and explored an approach to modern art.

English:

Students refreshed their writing skills with some creative writing prompts and interpretations of music through story.  Nouns, adjectives, and verbs were also reviewed with students challenged to come up with over 100 examples of each.  We will continue to develop our writing and editing skills next week and beyond.

February 25-28 Last Week of School

Thank you to everyone for your flexibility during what turned out to be our last day of school.  Everything happened so quickly!  Unfortunately we had to cancel our YEP performance but we were able to have a last minute dress rehearsal with other grades and share our learning.  This week we visited Grade 2's Special City and take a close look at Grade 6's Exhibition.

Also, this was the last day of school for Chinmay and Hyeri.  We will miss you both so much!  I am sure you will both go on to do amazing things in the future.  Please keep in touch!  I'm so sorry that we didn't have a chance to have a proper goodbye but you will both stay in our hearts and we will all cherish the memories we've shared here.

Here are a few highlights from this past busy week:

YEP Dress Rehearsal
Even though we weren't 100% ready to perform, Grade 5 gave a great performance of our Propaganda skit in front of primary.  It turned into a nice dress rehearsal and was fun to see what other classes had done as well.  I am really proud of Grade 5 for writing and performing such a great play.  Everything tied very closely with our unit on the dangers of propaganda and why it is important to be critical thinkers.

Visit to Grade 2
Grade 2's tourism department contacted us for a visit to their town.  We flew by plane (elevator) to arrive and experience all that their wonderful town had to offer such as a bakery, bank, dentist's office, daily newspaper, post office, library, and many more exciting places.  Kids were given mock money and allowed to shop around the town for goods and services.   It was a wonderful way for the two grades to role play and learn together.

Exhibition
After school on Friday we had the opportunity to see all of the hard work done by Grade 6 throughout the year.  Topics presented were about deforestation, volunteering, water pollution, and poverty.  It was a great opportunity for Grade 5 to ask questions and learn about how to become involved and take action in the community.  It was also a great chance for them to have a window into what they will start working on in the next month.
