Japanese Culture Day: July 1-5

There have been lots of exciting things going lately!  In addition to the activities associated with Japanese Culture day, our science experiments and research have continued.  Chiharu was selected as our Most Principled student by her classmates.  It was also Myra's last day, and we were all sad to see her leave.  We wish her the best of luck in the future!

Japanese Culture Day: Friday was full of fun Japanese related activities in honor of Japanese Culture Day.  Many students dressed in traditional attire for the day as well.  In the morning students joined in for Nagashi Somen where everyone had to collect noodles running down the slide with their chopsticks for a fun snack.  After lunch there were a variety of Japanese games and face painting.  Thank you to our parent volunteers as well!

UoI: This week during our Unit of Inquiry students selected five scientists and researched their contributions to the world of Science.  Students created a PowerPoint slideshow and presented it first to their fellow Grade 5 classmates and then proceeded to present to classmates in either Grade 3, 4, or 6.  They were well informed and did a wonderful job!

Music
🎶 Students inquired about how to produce a more beautiful sound on Pianica and recorder. They learned the posture, hand positioning, blowing as well as fingering. We started to practice "Sugarcane Farm" ( サトウキビ畑)which is music from Okinawa that describes not only the beautiful nature scene but also the tragic history of the many innocent people who were killed in the second World War there. Understanding the musical context leads students to perform more expressively.  --Ms. Kyoko
